Health and Safety - Know Your Signs

Knowing your health and safety signs is crucial to understanding quickly the exact meaning of a sign, whether in a workplace or public space.

There are five different types of health and safety signs, all of which mean different things and are used to portray information through shape and colour, these are most often used on construction sites, hospitals, manufacturing environments, warehouses, offices and anywhere that important information needs to be displayed.

The five main types of health and safety signs are:

Mandatory Signs

These signs tell you to do something - they are alway blue and white with a pictogram in a circle. They can be displayed with and without words. When you see a mandatory sign you must obey its instructions.

Shape - Circle

Colour - Blue

Meaning - Obey

Prohibition Signs

These signs tell you not to do something - they are always red and black with a pictogram in a circle with a line through. They can be displayed with and without words. When you see a prohibition sign you must obey what the sign is instructing you not to do.

Shape - Circle

Colour - Red

Meaning - Do not / stop / no

Examples:

Safety Warning Signs

These signs are to warn you of danger - they are always lack and yellow with a pictogram in a triangle. They can be displayed with or without words. When you see a warning sign you should be aware of a potential danger.

Shape - Triangle

Colour - Yellow

Meaning - Warning / danger

Examples:

Safe Condition Signs

These signs are used to direct you to safety - they are usually green and white with text and icons in a rectangle shape. To be used as directional to safety and or aid.

Shape - Rectangle

Colour - Green

Meaning - Direction to safety / aid

Examples:

  • Fire Exit
  • Assembly Point
  • First Aid
  • Push Bar to Open

Fire Equipment Signs

These signs are used to direct you to fire equipment  - they are usually red with text and icons in a rectangle shape. To be used as informative fire safety and instructional signs.

Shape - Rectangle

Colour - Red

Meaning - Fire Safety

Examples:

  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Fire Use Only
  • Fire Alarm Call Point
  • Fire Blanket
